Hm.
I knew the actual future Marty visits in the sequel is 2015, but there is a point early in first movie where doc brown is trying out different dates on the DeLorean, one of which is the signing of the declaration of independence, before settling into 1955. I was under the impression that’s what the 2012 date was but it did seem awfully arbitrary. Much as I like this movie I can’t remember every single detail in it.
That’s a really weird hoax to pull off in the first place, why would you even
